Health classes explained
The four main rate tiers—Preferred Plus, Preferred, Standard Plus and Standard—and how your health, age and other factors determine your placement.
Term life premiums are based on rate class. Each carrier uses slightly different terminology, but the structure is the same: Preferred Plus (sometimes Super Preferred or Preferred Best), Preferred, Standard Plus, and Standard, with additional table ratings for elevated risk. People using tobacco have their own parallel ladder at increased costs.
What underwriters look at
Body composition (height and weight), vital signs and lipid panel, your family's medical history including early heart disease or cancer, your driving record, medications, job and activities, and nicotine or tobacco use. The highest class demands good results across almost everything; Preferred is more flexible; Standard Plus and Standard accept managed conditions like treated high blood pressure.
How to use the quote tool
The health question asks for an honest self-assessment: Excellent corresponds to Preferred Plus, Very good to Preferred, Good to Standard Plus, and Average to Standard. Your quote reflects the class you selected; the carrier verifies the final class after reviewing your application. If you're unsure, quote both a higher and lower class to compare—the actual application settles it. Overstating your health doesn't reduce your final bill; it just makes the quote less accurate.
Susman Insurance Agency can help you identify insurers with more favorable guidelines for applicants in particular health situations—which can matter more than the advertised rate.
